FSP 2016 Annual Retreat
Holy Spirit - Encino

The friars held their Annual Retreat at Holy Spirit Retreat Center,  March 17 - 20.  The theme of the Retreat was based upon Cardinal Mahony's homily which he gave during the Perpetual Profession of Bro. Cesar on Dec. 11, 2015 wherein he stated that "And Mary went in hast to greet her cousin Elizabeth... as the Friars of the Sick Poor go in hast to meet the needs of the sick poor and marginalized which they minister to".... "The friars render themselves poor by giving freely of their time whenever they hear the cry of the poor".... Carnidal Mahony then went on and spoke of the miracles performed by Jesus as recorded in the Gospel of Luke... all of which involved healing.
Fr. Eugenio Cardinas, Missionary of the Holy Spirit and a good friend of fsp also gave a conference to the friars during their retreat titled "Our Lady of Guadalupe: Queen and Mother of Mercy... Health of the Sick Poor".  To the friars surprise, Fr. Eugenio brought with him a replica of the Mantle that Mary was wearing during her apparition as Our Lady of Guadalupe... and as part of his presentation invited Bro. Richard to assist him as he "wrapped" each of the friars in Mary's Mantle while both prayed over them. Needless to say... it was a grace filled moment and made this 2016 Year of Mercy retreat one that fsp will long remember.

Three Friars Profess Vows at:
Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral

(L to R) Br. Adam Benedict (first vows), Fr. John Mary (first vows), Br. Manuel John (perpetual vows) during their Profession

On August 22, 2009 - The Queenship of Mary - The Friars of the Sick Poor of Los Angeles celebrated the Profession of Vows for three of their members.  Bro. Manuel John Martinez, fsp, professed his perpetual vows and Bro. Adam Benedict Becerra, fsp, and Fr. John Mary Sigler, fsp, professed their first vows.  His Eminence Cardinal Roger Mahony was the Presiding Celebrant of the Mass.  Bishops Oscar Solis and Edward Clark were co-celebrants as were several diocesan clergy and religious priests from various communities in the Archdiocese.  Also joining in this historic celebration of the very first Profession of Religious Vows to be held in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angeles, were the families and friends of the friars.   All three friars have been very involved in Ministry to those who are in most need.

Bro. Manny Martinez, fsp is the Director of Deacons for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.  Manny is also the Deacon of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels and serves as Events Coordinator for the Cathedral.  In his ministry, Manny has been of service to all those in need and in a very special way has ministered to those deacons and their families throughout the Archdiocese who give  so generously of their time and talents to the people of God within the Archdiocese.

Father John Mary Sigler, fsp is a Board Certified Chaplain at St. Mary Medical Center, Long Beach.  A priest in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles for 16 years, Fr. John is the Founder of the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles Spiritual Care Guild, which raises funds to further the Spiritual and Pastoral support of families who have children hospitalized at Children's Hospital. Fr. John provides not only for the Institutes Sacramental needs, but remains available to the sick poor and marginalized of the Archdiocese when they are in need of priestly & pastoral ministry.

Bro. Adam Benedict Becerra, fsp is currently a Chaplain Intern at County USC Medical Center while at the same time completing his Clinical Pastoral Education at Vitas Hospice - Encino.  Bro. Adam is well known for his love of Campus & Youth  Ministry, wherein he furthers the charism of fsp by involving and empowering his students to advocate for change in the lives of the sick poor - being their voice.  Bro. Adam plans to return to St. John Seminary to complete his studies for the priesthood in the near future.

It is with great joy  that these three men have made their profession of vows as Friars of the Sick Poor... They are certainly exemplary friars and are well known and respected in the Archdiocese for their witness and ministry  to those who are sick poor and marginalized within our midst.
